SuperSubs is a collection of the best moments in football recreated by using Subbuteo figures. You can view all the pictures by clicking on the small thumbnails under the main picture or use the controls on the right hand side to start a slide show.
The Story So Far...
Anyone who grew up in the 60's, 70's or 80's will probably have fond memories of the table football game Subbuteo. Who could forget the joy of scoring a great goal and the pain of getting one of the little plastic players embedded in your knee. I seemed to spend more time stopping the family dog eating the ball and the Brazilian back four than I did actually playing the game.
In today's world of ultra realistic computer games like 'FIFA 08' and 'Pro Evolution Soccer' Subbuteo must seem very old fashioned to kids. I decided to see if my eight year old son would be as impressed with the game as I was at his age.
I purchased a new set of Subbuteo from the current manufactures Hasbro as a christmas present for him. Firstly let me say what a disappointment the new sets are, the little plastic men have been replaced by photographic cardboard cut outs! However, he didn't seem to mind that much and totally got into the game. I tried to explain how much better the old style figures where and I promised him I would try to find some.
The attic and garage was searched for old style figures but none could be found, obviously they had been thrown in the bin along with my Rubik's Cube and Action Man. Thankfully Ebay has a huge community of Subbuteo enthusiasts trading the traditional figures. A classic Brazil and England team was purchased for a fiver, which was the set I'd originally owned as a boy. I can still remember that awful day when I accidentally flicked Kevin Keegan into the gas fire.
The figures arrived in the post a few days later and sense of excitement in opening the little green box full of miniature footballers was the same as it had been 25 years previously (sad, I know). Although my son appreciated the traditional figures, he thought that the kits looked "a bit rubbish". We decided to give the figures a new paint job and bring them up to date.
The first team we attempted to paint was France, but we found it really tedious to paint eleven figures so we stopped after the first one! We hadn't painted the hair on that first France player and I noticed it look like Zidane, so we decided to paint the second figure in the Italian colours and recreate the famous Zidane head butt incident for a laugh and that's how SuperSubs was born, we are still recreating funny or famous moments from football games with our little men. We photographed a few of the figures so we could get them printed on T-Shirts and decided that we might aswell put them online for everyone to see.
